Special Event Stations to Look For; 28-29 July 2012

2012 London Olympics Special Event Stations will continue this weekend along with a number of other sporting event related special event stations.  Look for stations from the Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, the Brickyard 400, the Camp Perry National Match, and the Great Texas Ballon Race among others.  Another aviation related special event station will be W9ZL from the 2012 EAA AirVenture. A special event station that homebrewers might be interested in is W8M from the Maker’s Faire in Detriot, MI.  Get on the air and look for some of these special event stations!

1 -29 July, 0000Z-0000Z, W2S – 200th Anniversary of Lake Pleasant, NY:  The Speculator Amateur Radio Club will be operating in celebration of the bicentennial of Lake Pleasant, NY; tentative plans are to operate from Lake Pleasant Fire Hall, Lake Pleasant Historical Society, Speculator Pavillion,  and Oak Mountain on 1, 8, and 15 July.  QSL via  W. 1-31 July, 0000Z-1200Z, CG3B – 200th Anniversary of Friendship and Peace Between Canada and USA Following War of 1812: The Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club will be operating to celebrate 200 year of friendship between Canada and the United States following the War of 1812.  Special Operation Jul 1 1400Z to 2100Z. 21-28 July, 1300Z-2300Z, W0R – RAGBRAI 40th Annual Bicycle Ride Across Iowa: Team Megacycles will be operating to celebrate the 40th Annual Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, an event which they participate in.  Team Megacycles will be riding the ride with stations operating bicycle mobile, SAG vehicle mobile during the week as we ride across Iowa.  They’ll be operating CW near 28.545, 21.054, 14.054, and 7.0545 and SSB near 28.339, 21.339, 18.138, 14.339, and 7.191 as well as digital modes. Jul 22-Jul 29, 2200Z-2000Z, W9IMS – Brickyard 400:  The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Amateur Radio Club will be operating on or near 21.350, 14.240, 7.240, and 3.840 in conjunction with NASCAR’s Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 27-29 July, GB2VET – 10th Anniversary of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Reunion:  The Royal Air Force Amateur Radio Society will operate a special event station in honor of the 10th Anniversary of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Reunion including a working 1154-5 WW2 RAF Equipment with displays of vintage equipment, etc.  They’ll be operating on HF, VHFm UHF, and D-Star.  QSL via G0SWO.

25-29 July, 1500Z-0000Z, W9ZL – EAA AirVenture 2012:  The Fox Cities Amateur Radio Club will be operating from AirVenture 2012, the world’s largest airshow and fly-in, operating from EAA grounds.  They’ll be operating near 14.250 and 7.250  plus FM  on 52.550. Jul 27-Aug 4, 0000Z-2359Z, KB3WBE – Camp Perry National Match:  A number of shooter/hams at the Camp Perry, Ohio National Matches are slated to field calls between shooting matches at the Camp Perry Nationals this year under the umbrella organization of Shooter’s ARC. This will include a number of military, military packsets, civilian packsets and other portable rigs. Scheduled frequencies are 14.261Mhz between 1600 and 2200Z and 7.213Mhz between 2200 and 0400Z or until the band drops out.  QSL via SARC, PO Box 147, Summit Station, OH 43073; all requests for QSL must arrive on or before 30 September 2012. ul 28-Jul 29, 1400Z-1800Z, N0W – Grand Mesa 100+:  Grand Mesa 100+ will be operating from the top of the world’s largest flat top mountain on or near 28.345, 21.345, 14.245, and 7.245.  QSL via Larry Bullard, 2551 Westwood Dr, Grand Junction, CO 81505.  The mountain is in the Grand Mesa National Forest that was created 119 years ago. A 100 mile endurance foot race on the mountain is part of this special event.

Jul 28, 1300Z-2200Z, W8VP – Morgan’s Raid of Campbell Station OH:   The Cambridge Amateur Radio Association will be operating a Special Event to commemorate John Hunt Morgan’s raid and major destruction of Campbell Station on July 24, 1863. The town was rebuilt, and today it is known as Lore City, Ohio. Morgan surrendered on July 26 in Columbiana County Ohio. They’ll be operating around 7.230. Jul 28-Jul 29, 1200Z-2200Z, KC2YYL -Niagara County Community College’s 50th Anniversary Celebration:  The Niagara County Amateur Radio Events Services Station will be operating on 40 m in honor of the Niagara County Community College’s 50th Anniversary. GB2012MV – 2012 London Olympics:  The Warrington Amateur Radio Club, the South Manchester Amateur Radio Club, and the West Manchester Amateur Radio Club will be operating GB2012MV, a Multiband Olympic station celebrating the 2012 London Olympics, located in the football venue of Manchester in the North West of the UK.  QSL via Buro.

The Radio Society of Great Britain and Ofcom have authorized radio amateurs to use special prefixes between 21 July and 9 September 2012 in celebration of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games.  Callsigns beginning with GB2012 will be available for 2012 London Olympics Special Event Stations.  Additionally, four “flagship” stations using the prefix 2O12a (letter O not number zero) will be licensed during the 2012 Olympics.
