Special Event Stations to Look For, 4-5 August 2012

This weekend is a cornucopia of special event stations!  With summer in full swing, there are a lot festivals and fairs, some of which feature special event stations.  As usual, there are historic events and birthdays to recognize; this weekend features the birthdays of Ernie Pyle and the US Coast Guard along with historic events.  The weekend and week ahead will also see various island, summit, and park activations.  It should be a great weekend to find some special event stations on the air!

27 July – 4 Aug, 0000Z-2359Z, KB3WBE – Camp Perry National Match:  A number of shooter/hams at the Camp Perry, Ohio National Matches are slated to field calls between shooting matches at the Camp Perry Nationals this year under the umbrella organization of Shooter’s ARC. This will include a number of military, military packsets, civilian packsets and other portable rigs. Scheduled frequencies are 14.261Mhz between 1600 and 2200Z and 7.213Mhz between 2200 and 0400Z or until the band drops out.  QSL via SARC, PO Box 147, Summit Station, OH 43073; all requests for QSL must arrive on or before 30 September 2012. 3-20 August, 2200Z-0400Z, W9ISF – Indiana State Fair:  The Indiana State Fair Amateur Radio Club will be operating from the Indiana State Fair on or near 14.240 7.240.  QSL via Ken Bandy, 7405 E County Rd 900 N, Brownsburg, IN 46112.  They will also be QRV periodically on various bands.

3-5 August, 1400Z-2300Z, K7K – Cove Fort Days:  The Cove Fort Amateur Radio Club will be operating from the annual re-enactment of Cove Fort from Cove Fort in Beaver, UT.  Cove Fort was a fort and way station built in 1867 and restored in 1992.  They’ll be operating on or near 14.250, 7.272, 3.987, and 146.52.  Certificate via Alan Bryner, KK7UD, 4021 North 500 West, Ogden, UT 84414.

3-5 August, 0000z-2359Z, W9I – Ernie Pyle’s 112th Birthday:  Indy Hams will be operating on or near 21.060, 14.060, and 7.030 in honor of Ernie Pyle’s 112th birthday. 3-5 August, 2300Z-2200Z, XL31812 – War of 1812 200th Anniversary:  The Amherstburg Amateur Radio Club will be operating from the grounds of Fort Malden National Historic Park in Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812.   They’ll be operating on or near 14.150, 7.200, and 3.760. 4-5 August, 1400Z-2000Z, W9B – Sheboygan Brat Days:  The Sheboygan County Amateur Radio Club will be operating on  or near 21.350, 14.275, and 7.275 in conjunction with the Brat Days (as in Bratwurst) Festival in Sheboygan, WI. 4-5 August, 1400-0400Z, K1CG – 222nd Birthday of the United States Coast GuardThe Coast Guard CW Operators Association will be operating on or near 21.327, 21.052, 14.327, 14.052, 7.227, 7.052, 3.827, and 3.552 in honor of the Coast Guard’s 222nd birthday.  The callsign K1CG will be operated by several different stations across the country starting on the East coast and moving west.  QSL via Fred Goodwin, 424 N Bagley Ck Rd, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

5 August, 0900Z-2100Z, K0YB – Colorado 14er EventThe Colorado VHF Group will be operating on or near 147.420, 14.060, 14.260,  and 21.330 as part of the Colorado 14er Event. QSL via Bob Witte, 21060 Capella Dr, Monument, CO 80132.

5-8 August, 1500Z-2200Z, K8BLP – Twins Day Festival, The World’s Largest Gathering of Identical Twins:  The Triangle Amateur Radio Club will be operating on or near 21.250, 18.130, 14.260, and 7.210 in conjunction with the Twins Day Festival in Twinsburg, OH. 6-12 August, N6L – Lassen Volcanic National Park Activation:  A group of amateur radio operators will be operating from the Lassen Volcanic National Park to celebrate the park’s 96th Birthday.  They’ll be operating on CW and Phone throughout the week.  QSL via Lassen Volcanic National Park 96th Anniversary Special Event, 5921 Cedars Rd, Redding, CA 96001.  Website:  http://lassenbirthday.blogspot.com

GB2012MV – 2012 London Olympics:  The Warrington Amateur Radio Club, the South Manchester Amateur Radio Club, and the West Manchester Amateur Radio Club will be operating GB2012MV, a Multiband Olympic station celebrating the 2012 London Olympics, located in the football venue of Manchester in the North West of the UK.  QSL via Buro.

The Radio Society of Great Britain and Ofcom have authorized radio amateurs to use special prefixes between 21 July and 9 September 2012 in celebration of the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games.  Callsigns beginning with GB2012 will be available for 2012 London Olympics Special Event Stations.  Additionally, four “flagship” stations using the prefix 2O12a (letter O not number zero) will be licensed during the 2012 Olympics.
