Amateur Radio: Special Event Stations to Look For: 21-23 December 2012

If you’re reading this post, NASA was right and the world didn’t end today.  If the world didn’t end today, that means that there are end of the world special event stations to work over the weekend!  If you’re not interested in doomsday, then there is also a Christmas special event station scheduled this weekend.

16-21 Dec, 1500Z-1111Z, KC2UFO – Game Over:  The Skywatchers and Communicators of Merritt Island, FL will be operating a special event station leading up to Mayan Calendar’s End of the World on 21 December.  They’ll be operating from various locations on or near 14.260 and 7.050.  See for QSL instructions.

20-22 Dec, 0000z-2359Z, N0D – Doomsday, The End of the World:  The Brazos Valley Amateur Radio Club will be operating  on 10, 25, 20, and 40 Meters as well as amateur satellites for the end of the world.  QSL via KK5W, PO Box 2997, Sugar Land, TX 77487-29.  I don’t think you come up with a better write up than the Brazos Valley ARC already has for their event, so I’m just going to quote it here from the ARRL special events page:

The end is finally near. To celebrate this literally once in a lifetime event, Special Event Station N0D (Now Zero Days) will be activated on 10-80 meters and on several satellite passes for three days during and after(?) the end of the world. December 20; is a celebration of the end of the world. December 21, the day of destruction, we will be on the air as long as possible. December 22nd, that is a little iffy right now. Amateur radio stations around the crumbling globe are invited to contact N0D, who will be operating from a secret, undisclosed location. Our operating schedule may be a little erratic as destruction rains down upon us and as long as our antennas hold out. Those who may be looking skyward for the end of the world, N0D will be operating on several satellite passes. This will provide cosmic, maybe even intergalactic coverage for the end of the world as we know it. You can celebrate Doomsday by contacting N0D directly on the air. Amateurs can also become an official Doomsday station by registering on our website. You will be given a registration number and the authority to identify yourself as “Official Doomsday Station” followed by your Doomsday number. QSL with SASE to KK5W. If Doomsday actually does happen, we regret that a QSL will not be possible so hold on to your SASE until the 22nd at least. Check out our website for a preview of the N0D QSL card. Official Doomsday stations will receive the Doomsday Station Certificate. It is not entirely clear exactly how it will happen. Will it be a cataclysmic shift in the earth’s magnetic field, Global Warming on steroids, earthquakes, volcanoes floods, global thermonuclear war, meteor collision, the 10 plagues of Egypt UFO invasion who knows ? There are scientists, soothsayers and philosophers on both sides of the question. Either way it will be an event worth remembering…or maybe there will be no one left to remember it? 20-22 Dec, 2200Z-2359Z, W2E – Doomsday 2012:  The Buck Mountain DX Club will be operating on or near 28.366, 14.266, 7.266, and 3.866 (see what they did there!).  QSL for certificate via Dennis M. Barrett, N4ECW, 1035 E 6th St, Cookeville, TN 38501. This is another one where you couldn’t write it up any better, here’s their description of their station:

W2E (short for World 2 End) event celebrates the end of the Mayan Calendar and what has been characterized in popular culture as Doomsday 2012. Special emergency power has been arranged in the event commercial power connections are inexplicably terminated. Also, 7.266 MHz will be manned using a vintage Hallicrafters transmitter and receiver should solid state transceivers become non-functioning.

22 Dec, 0000z-2359Z, WC5C – Day After Doomsday Operation:  The Tri-County Amateur Radio Club will be operating from Lake Mineral Wells State Park on or near 28.340, 28.040, 14.340, and 14.040 on the day after the end of the world. QSL for certificate from Tri-County ARC WC5C, Day After Doomsday, 820 Wood Lane, Azle, TX 76020.  Website:

22 Dec – 3 Jan, 2300Z-2359Z, W4C – Christmas – Working for Christ:  Cross Mountain Ministries will be operating on or near 14.053, 7.188, 7.046, and 3.902. to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus.   QSL via John Spillman, 168 Bosley Drive Ext., Stanley, VA 22851.

For more information on special event stations over the weekend, check out Jerry Taylor, KD0BIK’s Practical Amateur Radio Podcast. Each week he presents info on various special event stations that will be active over the coming weekend.  There’s lots of good info in Jerry’s podcasts in addition to the special event station info, give them a listen!
