As I mentioned on Twitter recently, I was able to identify two SEGARRN talkgroups as Glynn County Fire Department over the past week. When I’m in Brunswick, I try to leave the BCD396XT running with ID Tracker III on a netbook computer as much as possible logging and recording unidentified talkgroups on the SEGARRN system. TG 13320 and 13324 have been showing up periodically for awhile now but not with any really useful audio that would make identification easier. TG 13320 was clearly fire department but which department? TG 13324 seemed to be related to 13320 but once again, which department? This week, my portable monitoring setup gathered some useful audio that helped make a partial identification.
On 6 February 2013, it recorded Engine 6 and 51 conducting some radio testing on board a ship. Engine 6 is the Glynn County Engine Company stationed closest to the Georgia Ports Facility in Brunswick and 51 is one of the Glynn County Deputy Fire Chiefs. It sounded like Engine 6 was going to various parts of the ship (Deck 12, Engine Room, Control Room, etc.) and doing radio checks with 51 from them to see how the coverage worked out. There wasn’t a channel name mentioned, just “on 700.” It could be surmised from this activity that they’re testing things out in preparation for a switch from the Glynn County 800 system to the SEGARRN system. I’ll continue to computer log this talkgroup along with others and see how things develop but I’m comfortable identifying it as a Glynn County FD talkgroup.
Using UIDs from this activity and recordings I was able to go back and link activity on TG 13324 to 13320. There were common UIDs between the two and finally a good recording. On 4 February 2013, for example, it picked up Engine 5 calling Squad 1. For those unfamiliar with Glynn County’s terminology, a Squad in Glynn County is an EMS unit, not a rescue unit. The Glynn County Squads are operated by Glynn County FD. I’ll continue to watch this talkgroup as well and look for more common UIDs between it and 13320 but for now I feel comfortable identifying it as a Glynn County FD talkgroup as well.
