Amateur Radio: Special Event Stations to Look For; 2-3 March 2013

Although there are some special event stations scheduled for this weekend, this will not be a good weekend for hunting special event stations.  The ARRL DX Contest (Phone) will run from 2 March, 0000Z to 3 March, 2400Z this weekend; it is always a very busy contest and will saturate the bands when they are open for DX.

8-28 Feb, 0000Z-0000Z, KB9GSY – In Memory of JY1 The Late King Hussein of Jordan:  Ayman J. Azar – KB9GSY will be operating a special event station throughout the month of February in honor of King Hussein of Jordan.  King Hussein, an avid amateur radio operator, passed away on 7 February 1999. (Note:  As a student of history, I find King Hussein to have been one of the most interesting personalities in the Middle East, frequently finding himself between a rock and a hard place in the Arab-Isreali wars.)  KB9GSY will be operating on the 80-10 Meter amateur bands using CW, SSB, RTTY, and other digital modes.  QSL via Ayman J. Azar, 4421 Clark Ave, Hammond, IN 46327.  Website:

1-3 Mar, 1800Z-1800Z, K2O – Showboat Branson Belle:  The Tri-Lakes Amateur Radio Club will commemorating the 20th anniversary of the laying of the Showboat Branson Belle’s keel by operating a special event station on or near 28.477, 21.277, 14.227, and 7.178. Operations will be from the showboat’s wheelhouse.  QSL for certificate via Don McMahon, Senior Captain, QSL Special Event, 4800 State Hwy 165, Branson, MO 65616.  Website:

2 Mar, 1300Z-2100Z, W8VP – 210th Anniversary of Ohio Statehood:  The Cambridge Amateur Radio Association will be celebrating the 210th Anniversary of Ohio’s admission to the Union as the 17th State.  They’ll be operating on or near 14.260 and 7.235.  QSL for certificate & QSL via Cambridge Amateur Radio Association, PO Box 1804, Cambridge, OH 43725.  This is the third Special Event in CARA’s year-long 100th Birthday Celebration; a certificate will be available for anyone who works all 12 of CARA’s monthly Special Events of 2013.  Website:

3 Mar, 1400Z-2200Z, K1SV – 222 Year Anniversary of Vermont Statehood:  The Southern Vermont Amateur Radio Club will be celebrating the 222nd Anniversary of Vermont’s admission to the Union as the 14th State.  They’ll be operating on or near 14.186, 7.140, and 3.806. For more information on special event stations over the weekend, check out Jerry Taylor, KD0BIK’s Practical Amateur Radio Podcast. Each week he presents info on various special event stations that will be active over the coming weekend.  There’s lots of good info in Jerry’s podcasts in addition to the special event station info, give them a listen!
