Savannah – Late this afternoon, two French Air Force Mirage 2000s arrived at the Savannah Air Dominance Center at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport as FRENCH AIR FORCE 9175. They were supported by FRENCH AIR FORCE 4040 (C-135FR, 475, GRV02.91). Both the Mirages and the C-135 came in on VHF approach and tower frequencies and were also heard calling Air Dominance Center Ops on 237.000, although there seemed to be some confusion when they did. I was just leaving the airport as they landed, so I was able to get some crappy cell phone camera photos of them from a distance.
The French Air Force is definitely something you don’t see very often around Savannah, especially Mirage 2000s. Back on 2 October 2017, COTAM 1014 (A310, 418, ET03.060 French AF) arrived at Hunter AAF, so there’s definitely something up. My guess is that Mirages, C-135FR, and the COTAM arrival are related to a Bold Quest exercise since there was one in Savannah around this time last year. We shall see… stay tuned for more.
