Exercise Bold Quest Update; 28 October 2017

Savannah – The ongoing Bold Quest exercise here in Savannah has provided some interesting listening and plane watching. US, Canadian, French, and German aircraft based at the Savannah Air Dominance Center along with aircraft from Moody AFB, the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) Carrier Strike Group, and various tanker aircraft have been flying missions in the Coastal MOA, Townsend Range, and the Fort Stewart airspace.

I’m still not quite sure if the USS Truman CSG activity and Bold Quest activity are separate or blended. On one day, SENTRY 41 mentioned Bold Quest, on another day SENTRY 42 mentioned working with the Truman; the same frequencies were used both days. Some of the players such as VFA-211 fighters and PHOENIX 92 have seemed to have been involved in both, showing up on frequencies associated with both.

Over the last few days, I haven’t been able to monitor the activity live, but I have used the Uniden BCD436HP (with a Diamond SRH77CA whip antenna) to record activity while I was asleep. Here’s a list of frequencies and callsigns accumulated from the week’s listening and recordings:

The activity, or at least some of it, will continue next week; on exiting yesterday, KITE 23 told HANGOVER that they would be back on Monday. I’ll be doing some recordings next week as well as hopefully having the opporunity to monitor live on two days. I’ll try to post another update around Wednesday if there’s anything new to report. As always, any corrections and/or additions are welcome.
