Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; February 2019

February was notable more for what didn’t happen that didn’t happen. For the first time in several years, there wasn’t a Sentry Savannah exercise in February. Since the 43rd FS and 2nd FTS from Tyndall AFB always seemed to be the common denominator in Sentry Savannah exercises, I wasn’t surprised and to be honest, wasn’t expecting any Sentry Savannahs this year after Hurricane Michael devastated Tyndall AFB last year and scattered Tyndall’s assets across several other bases.

During the first half of February, I was able to hear part of the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)’s exercise off of the Florida coast. While it was too far away for me to hear a lot of the action, I was able to hear some of its northern Opfor activity including VFA-204 and Flight International and tanker support from the 6th AMW and Omega Air.

I’ve recently been tracking some callsign changes for VMFAT-501, the USMC F-35B training squadron at MCAS Beaufort, SC. They’ve primarily used SWEDE since they moved to Beaufort in 2014, with WARLORD used sparingly. At first, it seemed that WARLORD might be an in-transit callsign, but they’ve been using it more frequently for training sorties over the last month or so. In recent months, they’ve also been using MOJO, NITRO, and PHILLY. While I haven’t been able to make any connection between the squadron and MOJO and NITRO, PHILLY does seem to have a connection to VMFAT-501’s history. VMFAT-501 is actually VMFA-451 reactivated and redesignated, so they carry VMFA-451’s history and heritage. VMFA-451 was based at MCAS Beaufort prior to their deactivation in 1996, but from 1946 to 1954, they were based at NAS Willow Grove and then MCAS Kaneohe Bay and named the Fightin’ Phillies (they took the name Warlords when they transitioned to the FJ-2 Fury in late 1954). I would definitely guess that the use of PHILLY is a connection to the squadron’s heritage (and as a history buff, I love to see that).
