Sentry Savannah Wrap Up – April 2019

Savannah – The April 2019 Sentry Savannah exercise wrapped up last week, with the participants leaving before the Easter weekend began. It’s been a busy week since then, so it took me a while to have the opportunity to work on a wrap-up post. The frequencies and callsigns below are what I heard in use during the exercise and the tail numbers and registrations on the aircraft are what came from photographs I took and Mode-S logs. I was told that the Draken L-159s used 262.750 for air-to-air communications while they were en route to Savannah before the exercise, but I never heard it used while I was in town and able to monitor. It’s also possible that the L-159s used the callsign NINJA on one of the days I was in Brunswick.

BADGER 04 (L-159, N270EM, Draken Intenational) landing at Savannah-Hilton Head IAP after a Sentry Savannah sortie

Hopefully this isn’t the only Sentry Savannah exercise this year and we’ll have at least one or two more; they always make for interesting listening. This one was a treat because of the Draken L-159s, it’s the first time I’ve had the opportunity to see and hear them in action. The Air Dominance Center is also in use this week; VMFAT-501 is using it to conduct training operations while MCAS Beaufort is having their annual air show, so it’s a good opportunity for those of us in the Savannah area to see some F-35Bs.
