A Visit to Jekyll Island – Nature and Wildlife from 23/24 October 2019

Jekyll Island – I enjoyed spending a couple of days on Jekyll Island this week and one of the things I did there was watch and take photos of wildlife at Great Dunes Beach, the beach by the Jekyll Pier, and Horton Pond. I also dropped by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center and got to see some of their patients as well as watch a Vet and Vet tech working on an injured Gopher Tortoise.

I saw Sandpipers on both Great Dunes Beach and the beach by the pier as well as Pelicans at the beach and the pier. While walking on Driftwood Beach, I also saw a Bald Eagle, but it was too far away to get a goo photo. All around the island, there were Great Egrets and Wood Storks to be seen. At Horton Pond, there were a number of Black Crowned and Yellow Crowned Night Herons, turtles, and alligators.

After visiting the beaches and Horton Pond, I dropped by the Georgia Sea Turtle Center in Jekyll Island’s Historic District. In addition to a museum with information about Sea Turtles and a window where you can view Turtle Center personnel treating patient turtles, you can also walk through the area where their recovery tanks are and see some of the patient turtles.
