Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; December 2019

Between the traditional lack of activity around the Christmas Holiday week and the Christmas Holiday keeping me busy at work, December turned out to be a slim month (as usual). That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t an interesting month. A quick trip to Warner Robins to visit the Robins AFB Museum of Aviation gave me a few hours to monitor Robins AFB close up and the opportunity to see some MacDill AFB KC-135s working the pattern at Robins. Several times during the month, I caught VMFAT-501 F-35Bs from MCAS Beaufort using a callsign that I haven’t heard them use before – DOOM. I have to admit that it was a bit of disappointment when I realized that they were F-35s, traditionally that’s used by B-52s, a rare bird in these parts indeed. Finally, at the end of the month, I started hearing a different MH-65D working out of Coast Guard Air Station Savannah – 6598; apparently one of the five at the Air Station has been rotated out, but I haven’t yet figured which one.
