South Carolina/North Carolina Road Trip Day 4 – Amateur Radio, Public Safety, MilCom, and Aviation

Wilmington, NC – The plan for the day was to head north from Wilmington and visit the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores and Fort Macon near Atlantic Beach, NC and the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC. Today began much as the rest of the week did – wet. The showers and fog quickly burned off, however, and it turned into the best day of the week. That meant that 1) I didn’t have to alter any plans and 2) that it became a great day for MilCom monitoring. Both MCAS New River and MCAS Cherry Point were active and F-15Es from Seymour Johnson AFB worked the GIANT KILLER controlled offshore areas all through the day and into the night. From MCAS New River, AH-1Ws, UH-1Ys, CH-53Es, and MV-22Bs were active and AV-8Bs and KC-130Js from MCAS Cherry Point were active. While I was eating lunch in Atlantic Beach, the Craven County, NC Fire Department was working a fully involved structure fire that required mutual aid from Pamlico County, NC. I caught ten Amateur Radio repeaters active in the area and listened in on some QSOs (but didn’t make any because I was so busy listening to everything!) and it was another good day of APRS, as I was tracked in the Wilmington area and the Newport/Morehead City/Beaufort areas.

MilCom

While researching what I planned to program in my radios for this trip, I noticed that RadioReference had no listings for base radio systems at Camp Lejeune/MCAS New River or MCAS Cherry Point. My suspicion for both were that they were on the new USMC TRS like MCAS Beaufort and MCRD Parris Island in South Carolina. One of my radio projects for this trip, then, was to see if I could confirm it. Today, I was able to confirm my suspicion by identifying four sites in the area of Camp Lejeune/MCAS New River and one in the area of MCAS Cherry Point. At both locations, the System ID was 00A with the Camp Lejeune/MCAS New River sites showing sites 1 through 4 and the MCAS Cherry Point site showing site 12.
