Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap (with some Coastal North Carolina mixed in); January 2020

During January, I had some vacation time that gave me more time to listen to the radios and time to take a road trip through South Carolina and North Carolina that gave me the opportunity to do some listening near Shaw AFB as well as listening to the Fort Bragg, Seymour Johnson AFB, Camp Lejeune/MCAS New River, and MCAS Cherry Point areas for the first time. I posted a recap of the radio activity during my travels after I got home from my trip, but I’ve included much of that information in this recap as well. The net result was that I had more time than usual to listen to the radios so, in turn, this month’s recap is longer than usual. Savannah also got a surprise when NASA 809 (ER-2, N809NA, NASA) arrived in Savannah mid-month to fly science missions out of Hunter AAF through 1 March.

NASA 809 (ER-2, N809NA, NASA) departing Hunter AAF; by the time it got to the end of Runway 10, it was already too high to get a good photograph! (and this was with a 300mm zoom lens)

There are a couple of observations worth making this month. First, CPRW-11 P-8As from NAS Jax (VP-5, VP-8, VP-16, and VP-26) have been using non-normal Mode-S hex codes recently rather than the aircraft’s assigned hex code. I’ll be following up on this in a later post, but suffice it to say that they’ve been using these different hex codes more often than their regular hex codes. Second, KC-46A Pegasus flights from the 22nd ARW to the Georgia/South Carolina area have been increasing in frequency as they do refueling ops with F-16s from the 20th FW at Shaw AFB and the 437th/315th AW at Joint Base Charleston. It’s been nice to catch these new aircraft more often; hopefully, the training that they’re doing will help Boeing and the Air Force sort out the KC-46’s problems.

  1. Nice! I’m hearing NUGGET and ROULETTE flights (F-16CM, 77th FS) working TURBO 91 (KC-135R, 61-0315, 22nd ARW) in Bulldog on 343.750 with Air-to-Air on 259.900 and 262.000 as I type.

  2. Awesome post! I’ve been wanting to start doing military monitoring myself. I live in the Bulldog MOA so I’ve got planes running exercises all of the time, but I don’t know much at all about monitoring military comms. I might need to get with you on some pointers to get me started.

    • Thanks, Wayne. You’re in a good spot to get some good radio traffic from Shaw AFB F-16s, Joint Base McEntire F-16s, and MCAS Beaufort F/A-18s and occasionally F-35Bs. A good place to start would, of course, be the Bulldog MOA frequency 343.750. You’ll also want to keep an ear on 322.325 with Atlanta Center, which the aircraft will enter and exit the MOA on. Their air-to-air frequencies are in the monthly recap posts and on the MilAir page of this blog; keep in mind that frequencies between 225-400 MHz and 138-144 MHz will usually be in AM mode.

I’m planning some posts to explain frequency usage, but I’m not sure when I’ll be finished with them and post them. I can usually follow the Shaw and McEntire F-16s from 343.750 to 322.325 with Atlanta Center to 363.200 then 269.550 with Jacksonville Center then sometimes to 318.100 with Shaw Approach/Departure from here in Savannah. I’m not sure where you’re at under the Bulldog MOA, but those would be a good combination of frequencies to start off with.

      Good Luck!

      • Thanks for the tips. I was able to pick up some traffic on the Bulldog MOA frequency today.
