Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; October 2018

October was another bittersweet monitoring month. There was good listening, but it was tempered by the devastation wrought by Hurricane Michael upon the Florida Panhandle and Southwest Georgia. Luckily, Coastal Georgia escaped Michael’s wrath, but it did cause hurricane evacuations by Gulfstream aircraft and 165th Airlift Wing C-130s. I wasn’t able to hear as much of the activity as I did with Hurricane Florence, but military aircraft including C3I and ISR resources such as the MC-12s at Hunter provided support in the aftermath of Michael. In better news, the 21st Fighter Squadron and 14th Fighter Training Wing continued their late September training into early October. As I posted during the month, MCAS Beaufort F/A-18s and F-15Cs from Jacksonville IAP did some very interesting air-to-ground combat training in the Coastal MOA and at Townsend Range during the month as well.

Note:  In addition to posting Blog Posts and near-real-time reports on Twitter, I am now also using a Facebook page to put out scanning, history, and photography information. If you’re interested, you can follow KF4LMT’s Radio Shack on Facebook.

Please keep the people of the Florida panhandle and southwest Georgia in your prayers and help with donations or contributions as you can. Many will remain out of their homes for quite a while and have lost most if not all of what they had.

Mini-Road Trip Report: Savannah to Forsyth and Back; 24 October 2018

Savannah – Yesterday, I had to make a short road trip from Savannah to Forsyth and back to Savannah for work. As I usually do, I let the HP2 and TRX-2 record what they heard for logging after the trip. The early morning drive from Savannah to Forsyth wasn’t all that productive, but the drive back in the afternoon provided some good logs from the radios and some interesting listening. As always, these logs don’t include any law enforcement activity (or at least activity that I know to be law enforcement).

Public Safety

My main interest in public safety monitoring/logging during the trip was Laurens County. I’m never able to spend an extended period of time in Laurens County, it usually just consists of driving through or stopping for gas or meal in Dublin, but on my last few times through I began getting the suspicion that the county’s DMR radio system wasn’t conventional, but trunked. For this trip, I had their DMR frequencies programmed into the TRX-2 as both conventional and trunked and things seemed to be trunked. I hope to get some more opportunities in the near future to listen to this system and try to figure it out more. It also turned out to be a good opportunity to catch hear activity on the CGIRRS system used by Macon-Bibb County and the Tattnall County NXDN TRS (which can be heard from parts of I-16).

MilCom

While the drive to Forsyth was devoid of any MilCom activity except for some traffic on the US Army TRS at Fort Stewart and the USAF TRS at Robins AFB, the drive back to Savannah in the afternoon provided some highly interesting listening. There was some good SEAD/DEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses) training from 77th FS F-16 flights PINION ## and JACKPOT ## in the Bulldog MOA, but the most interesting traffic came from Townsend/Range Coastal MOA. For much of the drive down I-16 from Macon to Savannah, I could hear HAWK 8# (F/A-18D, VMFA-533), COWBOY 2# (F/A-18A+, VMFA-112), FANG 0# (F-15C, 125th FW), and GATOR 0# (F-15C, 125th FW) doing FAC-A and forward air controller training (more information in a future post). The USAF TRS site at Robins AFB can be heard from parts of I-16 and I-75 near Macon and it’s worth mentioning that this is the second trip in a row that all of the activity that I’ve heard from Robins site has been encrypted.

Hurricane Michael Notes and Observations (Updated 14 October 2018)

Note: Post Updated with some observations from Saturday, 13 October 2018

Savannah – Unfortunately the southeast has seen its second catastrophic hurricane this season. Just a month after Hurricane Florence devastated the Carolinas, Hurricane Michael brought destruction upon the Florida panhandle and southwest Georgia. Earlier this week, Hurricane Michael came ashore at Mexico Beach as a Category 4 (almost Category 5) storm, destroying the town and surrounding areas then tore into southwest Georgia while still a Category 3 storm. Due to the track of the storm across Georgia, the 165th AW C-130s and some of Gulfstream’s aircraft at Savannah evacuated the area, returning yesterday. The devastation wrought by Michael necessitated federal and military response similar to that of Hurricane Florence last month.

Gulfstream Savannah’s aircraft appeared to evacuate to Huntsville, AL just as they did during Florence. On Wednesday, 10 October while I was in Brunswick, I caught some of the Gulfstreams leaving Savannah: GULFTEST 11 (G500, N500GA, Gulfstream Aerospace), GULFTEST 90 (G650, N656GA, Gulfstream Aerospace), and GULFTEST 51 (G600, N601GA, Gulfstream Aerospace). Yesterday, after I got back to Savannah from Brunswick, I heard 12 Gulfstream and Gulfstream customer aircraft return from Huntsville. No doubt due to problems caused by Michael, these aircraft came back to Savannah from the northwest instead of the southwest like they did after Florence; I caught them on 132.925 with Jacksonville Center to 125.300 with Savannah Approach/Departure, then to Savannah Tower on 119.100. One of them also checked in with the Gulfstream Service Center on 128.925 prior to its arrival. (I didn’t catch two of the aircraft on Mode-S so I’m not sure what their registrations were)

GULFTEST 10 (G500, N500GA, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 20 (G500, N509GD, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 29 (G550, N584GA, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 33 (G650, N282GA, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 51 (G600, N601GA, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 62 (B-LWX, G-450, TAG Aviation Asia)
GULFTEST 62 (G450, N401SR, Gulfstream Leasing)
GULFTEST 64 (G650, N655GD, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 66 (B-8127, G-450, Private)
GULFTEST 83 (Gulfstream Hurrevac Flight)
GULFTEST 90 (G550, N582GA, Gulfstream Aerospace)
GULFTEST 97 (Gulfstream Hurrevac Flight)

I’m not sure where the 165th AW’s C-130s evacuated to, but yesterday, I heard four of their aircraft arriving back in Savannah in from the north following the same sequence of frequencies that the Gulfstreams did. Additionally, they checked in on 225.750 with squadron operations and were using 225.050 for air-to-air traffic.

DAWG 06 (C-130H3, 94-6706, 165th AW)
DAWG 08 (C-130H3, 94-6708, 165th AW)
DAWG 61 (C-130H3, 93-1561, 165th AW)
DAWG 63 (C-130H3, 95-1563, 165th AW)

The Federal and Military response to Hurricane Michael has so far been very similar to that from Hurricane Florence. I’m too far away from southwest Georgia and the Florida panhandle to hear any of it, but I did catch one military aircraft going to the area from Savannah and saw some aviation assets working in the area on ADS-B Exchange.  Just as during Florence, those aviation assets were C3I and ISR aircraft. Yesterday morning, SHADY 11 (MC-12S-2, 09-00642, 224th MI Bn) departed Hunter AAF to the southwest and later in the morning I saw it on ADS-B exchange doing orbits in the area of Panama City and Apalachicola, FL. In addition to the MC-12S-2, I also noted two US Customs and Border Patrol P-3 AEWC aircraft (N142CS and N146CS) working in the area and a USAF E-3 AWACS.

On Saturday, while taking a look at the Florida panhandle and southwest on Georgia on ADS-B Exchange, I noticed something interesting around Albany and Tifton, GA. N19HX, a Helicopter Express Bell 206L-3 helicopter, had come from around Tifton (probably out of the airport in Tifton) and begun working just south of Albany. N41HX, a Helicopter Express Bell 407 helicopter was working south of Tifton, roughly around I-75. Based out of Atlanta, Helicopter Express is a contractor that provides helicopter services for a variety of purposes, disaster relief being one of them. Given where they were working, I’d have to guess that they were part of the Hurricane Michael response. With the flight paths that were plotted on ADS-B Exchange, I’d guess that both aircraft are working out of Henry Tift Myers Airport in Tifton.

Thankfully, those of us in southeast Georgia came through Michael with few problems, as the storm moved through the state a bit more to the northwest of us than it could have. The people in the Florida panhandle and southwest Georgia, however, are suffering. Don’t forget that people in those areas are some of those that helped us after Hurricanes Matthew and Irma; it’s our turn to help them.

Please keep the people of the Florida panhandle and southwest Georgia in your prayers and help with donations or contributions as you can. Many will remain out of their homes for quite a while and have lost most if not all of what they had.

Coastal Georgia Military Monitoring Recap; September 2018

September was a busy and interesting, but bittersweet month of monitoring from the Coastal Georgia area. There was a lot to listen to, but partly for all of the wrong reasons because a fair portion of the activity heard was related to Hurricane Florence. Hurricane Hunter flights flew out of the Savannah Air Dominance Center at the Savannah-Hilton Head IAP prior to Hurricane Florence making landfall near the South Carolina/North Carolina border and both military and federal assets supported rescue, relief, and recovery efforts after she made landfall. Those assets included C3I and ISR resources such as USCG resources from all around the country, USAF rescue resources including aircraft from Moody AFB here in Georgia, MC-12s and E-8s based here in Georgia at Hunter AAF and Robins AFB as well as E-3s from Tinker AFB, and various Department of Homeland Security resources. A recap of the frequencies and callsigns I heard as resources were en route to and from South Carolina and North Carolina can be found here. Another interesting hurricane-related catch was the mass return to Gulfstream Savannah of test and service center aircraft from a precautionary hurricane evacuation to Lakeland, FL (it was done when the forecast potentially put Savannah in Florence’s path); you can see their fishhook-shaped approach path in one of the Mode-S images below. On a more positive note, the 21st Fighter Squadron from Luke AFB, which trains F-16 pilots for the Taiwan Air Force visited the Savannah Air Dominance Center at the end of the month and is still here at the beginning of October. The 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade at Hunter AAF began heavy flight activity last month after recently returning from a deployment and September was a good month for identifying their new aircraft.

Note:  In addition to posting Blog Posts and near-real-time reports on Twitter, I am now also using a Facebook page to put out scanning, history, and photography information. If you’re interested, you can follow KF4LMT’s Radio Shack on Facebook.

Please continue to keep the people of North Carolina and South Carolina in your prayers and help with donations or contributions as you can. Many are still flooded out, many will remain out of their homes for quite a while, and many have lost most if not all of what they had.

21st FS F-16s and 14th FTW T-38s at the Savannah Air Dominance Center

21st_Fighter_SquadronSavannah – Last week, F-16s from the 21st Fighter Squadron at Luke AFB and T-38s from the 14th FTW at Columbus AFB arrived at the Georgia Air National Guard’s Air Dominance Center (ADC) at Savannah-Hilton Head IAP for training. The 21st FS, the unit that trains Taiwan Air Force F-16 pilots, has visited here for training sporadically but this is the first time that they’ve been here in a few years (the last time I’ve got them in my logs is April/May 2014). The 14th FTW T-38s seem to be here to augment their training. I didn’t get very many opportunities last week to listen to them but I did yesterday so I’m finally able to post something about them.  The F-16s have been flying as DEALER and GAMBLER flights and using ADC frequencies 140.500, 141.150, and 142.700. I also noted that they used 141.925 yesterday, but I don’t have that as one usually used at the ADC so it may be one of theirs. The T-38s have been flying as DRAGON and VENT; DRAGON flights that I’ve heard haven’t seemed to be related to the F-16s but the VENT flights have. So far, the only air-to-air frequency I found for the T-38s is 142.375. The F-16s have been working in the offshore SUAs doing air-to-air training. The VENT T-38 flights have been supporting that and I’ve heard DRAGON flights working in the Coastal MOA/Townsend Range complex. Yesterday, the DEALERs, GAMBLERs, and VENTs were training with the Florida ANG 125th FW F-15s from Jacksonville IAP using NORAD discretes 293.600 and 316.300. Here’s where you can tune in and find them:

It’s also worth mentioning that some of the T-38s have shown up on Mode-S as ADFF9D, ADFFF6, ADFF78, and ADFF8F. The F-16s and T-38s arrived last Wednesday, but I’m not sure how long they’ll be here so catch them while you can.
