South Carolina/North Carolina Road Trip Scanning Report; 8-10 January 2019

Yesterday, I left Charlotte, NC for Columbia, SC to visit the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens and the South Carolina Military Museum. Afterward, I came back to Savannah, ending the trip. I’ll be posting about the places I visited on the trip over the next few days: Musgrove Mill State Park, the BMW Zentrum, the Greenville Zoo, the Carolinas Aviation Museum, the North Carolina Transportation Museum, Riverbanks Zoo, and the South Carolina Military Museum. The list below builds on the previous two days to cover the entire trip through the Clinton, Greenville, Spartanburg, Charlotte, and Columbia areas. Yesterday, without a doubt was the best military monitoring day of the trip since I was close to both McEntire JNGB and Shaw AFB. I was able to firm up some 20th FW air-to-air frequencies that I’ve been tracking: 262.000 for the 77th FS and 270.900 at 276.150 for the 79th FS. I was also able to hear some VMFAT-501 F-35Bs from Beaufort doing pattern work at Shaw AFB. I was hoping to hear some activity on the Shaw AFB P25 TRS, but all I heard were a few transmissions on what RadioReference lists as the Police talkgroup. Most of the unencrypted traffic that I heard from Fort Jackson on the US Army P25 TRS was range control type traffic.

Yesterday, my string of good luck in choosing restaurants continued. After visiting the zoo, I found an Italian restaurant, Delucca’s Italian Grill, nearby and went there for lunch. It’s a small restaurant in a small strip of stores, but it is very much worth a visit. The food is outstanding and the owner likes Blues music – so that’s what they have playing. The prices aren’t bad, either; I filled up on Chicken Parmesan with tea for $12.

South Carolina/North Carolina Road Trip Scanning Report; 9 January 2019

On the second day of my road trip, I traveled to Charlotte, NC to visit the Carolinas Aviation Museum and the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. Today’s list builds on yesterday’s list from the first day. Added to the list today were talkgroups from the NC VIPER P25 TRS and the Charlotte UASI P25 TRS. As conventional frequencies go, a few more National Park Service Blue Ridge Parkway P25 repeaters were added. Frequencies for Charlotte/Douglas IAP, Atlanta and Washington ARTCCs, and the NC Air National Guard were added in the aviation/MilCom category.

After lunch at the excellent Niko’s Grill near Charlotte/Douglas IAP after visiting the Carolinas Air Museum, I hung out at the Charlotte Airport Overlook for a while and watched some of the airliners taking off. This is a great spot for plane spotters to watch airport activity and take photos of planes. If you’re primarily into military aviation spotting, don’t expect to see much, but you’ll see a lot of commercial traffic. The only problem is that you’re right next to the transmitter site for the airport so radio monitoring/scanning can be an issue; I ended up just turning off the Uniden Home Patrol 2 and the Whistler TRX-2 in my mobile station due to interference. Niko’s Grill, by the way, was a great choice for lunch; I had a delicious gyro with fries. If you go, avoid the lunch rush around noon, it fills up very quickly – it’s obviously a very popular place for lunch.

Miguel’s Mexican/American Restaurant, don’t let appearances fool you

Tucked away off of I-85 Exit 32 in Charlotte, is Miguel’s Mexican/American Restaurant. Don’t let the small, decidedly unfancy appearance of Miguel’s fool you, the food is outstanding. They serve both Mexican and American cuisine; I don’t know about the American part, but the Mexican is outstanding. For supper tonight, I had shrimp enchiladas (grilled shrimp with grilled peppers and onions) and they might just have been the best enchiladas I’ve ever eaten. If you’re around Charlotte/Douglas Airport, you’ve got to eat at Miguel’s!

South Carolina/North Carolina Road Trip Scanning Report; 8 January 2019

I’m on the first day of a three-day trip through parts of South Carolina and North Carolina. Today’s travels took me through the Clinton, Greenville, and Spartanburg areas. I was originally planning to visit the Ninety Six battlefield today, but since it is closed due to the government shutdown, I visited the Musgrove Mill State Park in Clinton, SC, the BMW Zentrum in Spartanburg, SC, and the Greenville Zoo in Greenville, SC.

I let the Uniden Home Patrol 2 and the Whistler TRX-2 scan, log, and record while I did the driving and both were very productive. There was a lot of VHF/UHF public safety conventional and a lot of public safety activity on the Palmetto 800 P25 statewide trunked repeater system in South Carolina. F-16s from the 20th FW and the 169th FW were heard working in the Bulldog MOA and at Poinsett Range and 20th FW F-16s were also working in W-161/177 with an E-3 AWACS. There were a couple of surprises, too – with the government shutdown in effect, I didn’t expect to hear any National Park Service or US Forestry activity, but there were a few brief catches on some of their frequencies.

For supper tonight, I stopped at Southern Barbecue in Spartanburg. I love North Carolina style vinegar based barbecue and Southern Barbecue is the best I’ve had since Don’s BBQ in Pooler, GA closed. If you find yourself around I-85 and US-221 in Spartanburg, it’s well worth the stop for great food and friendly service.

Mini-Road Trip Report: Savannah to Forsyth and Back; 24 October 2018

Savannah – Yesterday, I had to make a short road trip from Savannah to Forsyth and back to Savannah for work. As I usually do, I let the HP2 and TRX-2 record what they heard for logging after the trip. The early morning drive from Savannah to Forsyth wasn’t all that productive, but the drive back in the afternoon provided some good logs from the radios and some interesting listening. As always, these logs don’t include any law enforcement activity (or at least activity that I know to be law enforcement).

Public Safety

My main interest in public safety monitoring/logging during the trip was Laurens County. I’m never able to spend an extended period of time in Laurens County, it usually just consists of driving through or stopping for gas or meal in Dublin, but on my last few times through I began getting the suspicion that the county’s DMR radio system wasn’t conventional, but trunked. For this trip, I had their DMR frequencies programmed into the TRX-2 as both conventional and trunked and things seemed to be trunked. I hope to get some more opportunities in the near future to listen to this system and try to figure it out more. It also turned out to be a good opportunity to catch hear activity on the CGIRRS system used by Macon-Bibb County and the Tattnall County NXDN TRS (which can be heard from parts of I-16).

MilCom

While the drive to Forsyth was devoid of any MilCom activity except for some traffic on the US Army TRS at Fort Stewart and the USAF TRS at Robins AFB, the drive back to Savannah in the afternoon provided some highly interesting listening. There was some good SEAD/DEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses/Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses) training from 77th FS F-16 flights PINION ## and JACKPOT ## in the Bulldog MOA, but the most interesting traffic came from Townsend/Range Coastal MOA. For much of the drive down I-16 from Macon to Savannah, I could hear HAWK 8# (F/A-18D, VMFA-533), COWBOY 2# (F/A-18A+, VMFA-112), FANG 0# (F-15C, 125th FW), and GATOR 0# (F-15C, 125th FW) doing FAC-A and forward air controller training (more information in a future post). The USAF TRS site at Robins AFB can be heard from parts of I-16 and I-75 near Macon and it’s worth mentioning that this is the second trip in a row that all of the activity that I’ve heard from Robins site has been encrypted.

New SEGARRN Site in Candler County

Metter – A few weeks ago, I came across something interesting while looking through the FCC database: 700 MHz trunking frequencies licensed to Candler County: 769.10625, 769.80625, 770.60625, and 771.33125 under license WRBT983. Shortly thereafter, I began hearing some Candler County related activity on the SEGARRN system that is used by Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, and Liberty counties (and also has a site in Bulloch County). Yesterday I had the opportunity to take a ride up to Metter and check things out. I found that the frequencies licensed under WRBT983 are definitely a SEGARRN site; 771.33125 is the control channel and the site ID is 02C5-0108. Both in the Savannah area and while I was in Metter, I only heard law enforcement related traffic – no fire or EMS related traffic. For that reason, I’m sorry – but I can’t post any talkgroups I heard (for those not familiar, I don’t post law enforcement related information due to the nature of my employment). Should I start hearing some fire/EMS related traffic I’ll definitely pass it on. If you’re in the Savannah, Pembroke, Statesboro, or Metter areas, put your trunk tracking scanner in search mode and I’m sure you’ll come about them quickly enough.

I wonder if this means we’ll see Bulloch County make another try to transition from their old SmartZone system to the SEGARRN at some point in the future? Surely Motorola isn’t going to support the older equipment forever and with most of the surrounding agencies on the SEGARRN, it could force their hand.

Food always goes good with radio and I had a great meal at Bevrick’s Char House Grille in Metter near where I found a nice shady spot under a lakeside pear tree to monitor the new Candler County SEGARRN site. Bevrick’s is a steakhouse type restaurant alongside a lake just off of I-16 Exit 104 in Metter. The prices are pretty good, the view of the lake is good, and the food I had was excellent. I tried the “Junkyard Chicken,” which is a grilled chicken breast smothered with cheese, bacon, grilled onions and peppers, jalapenos, and diced tomatoes. There are a number of good restaurants in Metter just off of I-16 including Jomax BBQ and Papa Buck’s BBQ and I’d definitely add Bevrick’s to that list. Any of the three are good places to stop if you find yourself around Metter and meal time.
